In 1695, the city's artillery arsenal was opened in the center of Berlin. The building maintained its military function until the mid-19th century, when it became obsolete. At that time it became an army museum until 1945.
In addition to being a museum space, during the years of the National Socialist regime, the interior courtyard of the building was used for the state funerals of high-ranking personalities of the regime, such as Marshal Erwin Rommel.
In 1943, during an exhibition of captured Soviet weapons, the army attempted to assassinate Hitler by suicide bombing, but the attempt failed. The plan was that the colonel who would teach the exhibition to Hitler would carry an active bomb under the jacket, which would explode during the tour. Hitler went to the place but did not visit the exhibition, so the attack did not take place.
