The present state of the Arts; the sciences; and general culture of the country?
Jefferson's Notes:
The cultivation of the fine arts is yet an alien to our land. They are progress will depend on our future wealth and population; and may therefore assume that they will ultimately be cherished among us. The present circumstances and situation of our people do not permit us to make great progress in the finer progress of elegant arts but our encouragement of mechanical arts is far greater.
There has existed, and still exist much jealousy in both countries. I think particular circumstances rather than a cankerous disposition at either side produced and fomented the former; and subsequent prejudices still keep it up on both sides in a considerable degree.
