Who is hephaestion to Alexander the Great?

Hephaestion was Alexander the Great's closest friend and most trusted general. They grew up together in Macedonia and shared a strong bond of friendship that lasted until Hephaestion's death in 324 BC. Alexander relied heavily on Hephaestion's advice and counsel, and often entrusted him with key positions of responsibility.
