What is the medieval period alphabet?

The Blackletter or Gothic alphabet is the set of script types that were used in Western Europe from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, and even into the 18th century in some areas. Although the term Gothic can refer broadly to any European medieval writing style, it particularly refers to the later Gothic "pointed" styles, which were popular from about 1150 to 1500. Gothic scripts are characterized by angular, pointed, elaborate letters, and complex ligatures and abbreviations.
