July 27, 1794:with the execution of Robespierre and his closest collaborators, the Terror ends
It is called Regime of Terror or simply Terror the darkest and bloodiest period of the French Revolution, which began in July 1793 and ended in July 1794, precisely on the 27th, with the execution of Maximilien Robespierre and of his closest followers and collaborators, including Louis Saint-Just and Georges Couthon.
A temporally short period, but which led to the death of an impressive number of people, in the vast majority of innocent cases, due to the brutal and indiscriminate policy of repression implemented by the members of the Public Health Committee.
But how many were the guillotines in that terrible year?
The figures are gruesome to say the least.
A precise estimate is, for obvious reasons, impossible, but based on what is reported by the sources and the documentation in our possession, it is estimated that up to 3,000 victims were executed in Paris alone , which on average make 100 a day.
Eyewitnesses tell of a city that has become unlivable, impregnated with the acrid smell of blood in the air and in the streets, which at the time were unpaved, tended to hold it back and absorb it (I will return to the subject in special posts) .
