How could you get from place to in Ancient Greece?

On Foot

- People would travel on foot for short distances, especially within cities

- Walk along a mountain pass or travel between town and the port

- The majority of the travelers were pilgrims or shepherds on the move

By Horse or Donkey

- Horses and donkeys were the primary means of transportation over land

- Most people walked, rode a donkey or horse, or hitched a ride with someone who was traveling

By Horse and Carriage

- The affluent rode in horse-drawn carriages

- Could be used over longer distances for travelers willing to pay

By Boat

- Boats were another important form of travel in Ancient Greece

- Traveled across the sea to trade, colonize new territories, or go to war

- The ship, or trireme, was rowed by oarsmen

- The Greeks also invented two types of sail ships which allowed for faster travel

- Used for commerce, colonization, naval attacks, and travel by citizens
