Homestead Strike of 1892 involved a dispute between the Carnegie Steel Company and the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers. The Pinkerton National Detective Agency was hired by Carnegie Steel to provide security during the strike and to protect company property. The Pinkerton guards attempted to break the strike by evicting workers from company housing and intimidating strikers. This led to violent confrontation including a gun battle that resulted in several deaths. The use of Pinkerton's was widely criticized and ultimately backfired as public sympathy shifted towards the strikers, leading to increased support for the union and eventually forcing Carnegie Steel to agree to negotiate.
