History of Europe

What were the terms of peace during World War I?

The Treaty of Versailles (1919)

- Germany lost Alsace-Lorraine to France, Eupen-Malmédy to Belgium, North Schleswig to Denmark, and West Prussia, Posen, and Upper Silesia to Poland.

- Germany lost all overseas colonies.

- Germany was mandated to pay reparations of 132 billion gold marks ($33 billion) to the Allies over 30 years.

- Germany was limited to a military of 100,000 men, the air force was abolished, and the navy was restricted to six battleships, no submarines, and no aircraft.

- The Rhineland was demilitarized for 15 years.

- Germany was forced to accept responsibility for causing World War I (the "war guilt clause").
