Objects from the Turkish flagship that Kanaris burned in Chios

Exhibition of objects recovered from the wreck of the flagship of Kara Ali blown up by the Canary Island, outside the port of Chios, is hosted by the Maritime Museum of Chios. The exhibition was held at the initiative of the Regional Unit of Chios, while, as the deputy governor of Chios Pantelis Bougdanos emphasizes, for the first time the findings of the shipwreck of the flagship are coming to the island.

The archaeologist of the Ephorate of Maritime Antiquities, Dimitris Kourkoumelis, also refers to the necessity of continuing research outside the port of Chios in order to obtain more historical data about the shipwreck, on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition.

"At the beginning of the 19th century", he argued, "there is no other incident that happened outside the port of Chios other than the burning of the Turkish flagship by Konstantinos Kanaris". And he added that in any case the wreck has suffered significant damage since the first survey that was done in 1988 in relation to the image of the wreck in 2005, when it was last recorded by the Ephorate of Marine Antiquities. The exhibition at the Naval Museum of Chios will last for a year and, among other things, it also includes personal belongings of the arsonist Konstantinos Kanaris
