Did the Wilmot Proviso lead to compromise of 1850?

The Wilmot Proviso did not directly lead to the compromise of 1850. The Wilmot Proviso was a proposal that prohibited slavery in any territory acquired from Mexico after the Mexican-American War. It was introduced in Congress in 1846 and was defeated several times. The compromise of 1850 was a set of laws passed in 1850 to resolve the issue of slavery in the newly acquired territories. The compromise admitted California as a free state, organized the Utah and New Mexico territories without addressing the issue of slavery, and strengthened the Fugitive Slave Act. The compromise was the result of negotiations between northern and southern politicians, and was not directly related to the Wilmot Proviso.
