Who did the US purchase Louisiana Territory from in 1803?

The United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803. The purchase was negotiated by President Thomas Jefferson and his secretary of state, James Madison, for a total of $15 million. The purchase included the present-day states of Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota, as well as parts of Minnesota, Texas, and New Mexico.
