When did northerners want slave trade abolished?

The northern states began to move toward the abolition of slavery in the late 18th century. In 1777, Vermont became the first state to abolish slavery, and by 1804, all of the northern states had followed suit. The abolitionist movement in the North was fueled by a number of factors, including the growing belief that slavery was morally wrong, the economic competition between the North and the South, and the political power of the free states.
