Early Peasant Movement

The success of Champaran Satyagraha inspired Vibhusharan Prasad and other farmers of Chhapra (Saran) to fight against exploitation and atrocities. In June 1919 AD, Vibhusharan Prasad, popularly known as Swami Vidyanand, organized the farmers of Madhubani district for the movement against Darbhanga Raj. The main feature of this movement was the protest against the atrocities of the cowherds of the Raj in the order of revenue collection and the right to obtain fruits and wood from the forest.

The movement gradually expanded to Purnia, Saharsa, Bhagalpur, and Munger districts. Maharaja Darbhanga formed a provincial assembly in 1922 AD to destroy the effect of the movement. Later on, the Maharaja accepted some of the demands of the farmers and the movement got lax.

Kisan Sabha

In 1922-23 AD, the Kisan Sabha was formed in Munger by Sahai Mohammad Zuber and Shri Krishna Singh. On March 4, 1928, Swami Sahajanand Saraswati formally established the Kisan Sabha in Bihta (Patna) and in 1929 the Bihar Provincial Kisan Sabha was established in the meeting held at Sonepur Mela and Swami Sahajanand its president and Shri Krishna Singh its secretary. In spreading it in the villages of Bihar, he got the support of leftist leaders like Karyanand Sharma, Rahul Sankrityayan, Panchanan Sharma, Yadunandan Sharma etc. In 1935 AD, in the Kisan Sabha, the resolution of zamindari abolition was passed.

Under the leadership of Karyanand Sharma, the Badhiya Tal or Bakashat movement started in Munger district. In 1936, All India Kisan Sabha was formed in Lucknow under the chairmanship of Swami Sahajanand. Pro. NG Ranga was made its secretary.
