Gossip in History

Talking about other people's lives is a very old practice, from the time of caves. Prehistoric men sought information about other people's lives to find out about their weaknesses, their fears, what they knew how to do, their desires and others.

At that time, there was no writing and consequently the information was passed on orally. Gossip then became part not only of social life, but also of the political part, where it was used to demoralize monarchs, and of human history, where wrong information could change the entire trajectory of history.

In 1560, Queen Elizabeth I was heavily attacked by gossip about her personal life. In 1917, Tsar Nicholas II and his wife were victims of gossip that focused on the couple's intimate life. In 1922, the dictator Mussolini was the target of gossip, but for him it had a positive effect, as he was given prestige for carrying out a project that he had already started before he took power in Italy. In this way, gossip had and still has the power to harm or benefit a person.
