History of Civil Disobedience Movement
In December 1929, the resolution of the Civil Disobedience Movement was passed in the Lahore session of the Congress. It was presided over by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The resolution of complete independence was also passed in this session and it was decided to celebrate Constitution Day on 26 January.
Independence Day was celebrated with enthusiasm in Bihar on 26 January 1930.
Gandhiji's Dandi Yatra started on 12 March 1930 and on 5 April he started violating the salt law. The Salt Satyagraha was joined by Mr. Girdhari Choudhary (aka Karo Babu), a resident of Beri in Bihar and a close associate of Gandhi, who spent a lot of time with Bapu at the Sabarmati Ashram.
Girvardhari Chaudhary was the only representative of Bihar among the 78 volunteers who left the Sabarmati Ashram for Dandi with Bapu. The Salt Satyagraha was started in Bihar on 15 April 1930 by making salt from salty soil in Champaran and Saran districts. This movement was led by Jagat Narayan Lal in Patna, Girish Tiwari, Chandrika Singh etc. in Saran, Ramdayalu Singh, Ramanand Singh etc. in Muzaffarpur, Sri Krishna Singh in Munger, Satya Narayan Sinha in Darbhanga etc.
Gandhiji was arrested on 4 May 1930. In protest against this, demonstrations were held all over Bihar and on 9 May 1930, Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee proposed a dharna in front of shops of indigenous goods and liquor.
In the course of this movement, there were also agitations in Bihar to stop the chowkidari tax and give it. Constitution Day was celebrated all over Bihar on 26 January 1932.
On April 7, 1934, Gandhiji in one of his statements advised to suspend the Civil Disobedience Movement. On May 18, 19, the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee supported it and the movement was suspended in Bihar.
