The first clear mention of Linga worship is found in the Matsya Purana. The first mention of Shaiva sects occurred in the Mahabhasya of Patanjali under the name Shiva Bhagwat. Pashupat is the oldest sect of Shaivism. The founder of this sect was Lakulish or Nakulish.

Vaishnavism

The founder of this religion was Vasudeva Krishna. Vrishni dynasty was the leader of Yadav clan. The principle of Bhagavata Dharma is contained in the Bhagavad Gita. Shaivism has also expanded in South India.
