Once inside the city, the Crusaders engaged in a brutal massacre of its inhabitants, sparing neither women, children, nor the elderly. It is estimated that around 70,000 people were killed during the sack of Jerusalem.
After the massacre, the Crusaders established a Christian kingdom in Jerusalem, which would last for almost two centuries. The Crusader states in the Levant were a source of constant conflict with the Muslim world, leading to several more crusades in the following years.
