The introduction of the Battle of Crete, as a unit in the history of the 3rd Lyceum, is requested by a new Parliamentary intervention - Question to the Minister of Education, the Hon. Head of Development &Investments K.O. SYRIZA Progressive Alliance, Member of Parliament of Heraklion Haris Mamoulakis , with the co-signature of 17 more MPs.
"The Battle of Crete, in addition to being one of the most glorious pages of our history, has proven to have a decisive influence on the outcome of the Second World War" says Haris Mamoulakis in his statement , emphasizing:"The events of that period and the heroic resistance of the Cretans, have been etched in the collective memory in an indelible way. The time has come for them to be reflected in the curriculum, so that our children learn the history of our country and the achievements of our ancestors."
As mentioned in the Question, the consequences of the huge losses in the elite paratrooper units and in the German air force for Hitler are known, but also the contribution of the Battle to the delay of the attack of the German army in the then Soviet Union. The above is known to the community of historians and the wider reading and scholarly public, but the students themselves are essentially deprived of any systematic engagement with them through the History course in secondary education.
The question:
"The importance and contribution of the Battle of Crete to the final outcome of the Second World War has been documented many times by the historiographical community. The consequences of the huge losses in the elite units for Hitler are well known of the paratroopers and the German air force, but also the contribution of the Battle to the delay of the German army's attack on the then Soviet Union. heroic assistance of the local population have been etched in the collective memory of the island's inhabitants in an indelible way. History lesson in secondary education.
As is known, the material of the history of the book of the Third Lyceum extends up to the period of the 2nd BC. but without having any special or extensive reference to the events that led to the Battle of Crete. The occasion of the completion of 81 years offers a first-class opportunity for the state to review the curriculum of History of the 3rd High School and to introduce the above events into the curriculum.
Considering all the above,
The responsible Minister is asked:
Does the government intend to review the content of the 3rd High School History course to include the Battle of Crete?
