What was the policy of appeasement trying to achieve?

Appeasement was the policy of making concessions to an aggressive power in order to avoid war. It was followed by the British government in the 1930s in an attempt to avoid war with Germany.

The policy of appeasement was based on the belief that territorial concessions to Germany would satisfy Hitler's demands and prevent him from starting a war. However, it was ultimately unsuccessful. Hitler continued to make demands and eventually invaded Poland in 1939, which led to the outbreak of World War II.
