What was official religion of the roman empire before Christianity?

Roman paganism, also called Classical polytheism, was the traditional religious system of Ancient Rome. It had originated in ancient Italy, and as the Roman Empire expanded it absorbed some of the beliefs and practices of the regions it conquered. Although the Roman state would adopt Christianity as its official religion in the 4th century AD, traditional religious practices continued in Rome and among the rural population until at least the 6th century.
