Who invented helicopters and when?

Leonardo da Vinci sketched out some ideas of primitive helicopter designs in the 15th century. Later, in 1842 and 1844, English inventor, Sir George Cayley, conducted the first successful model helicopter flights. It was not until 1907, however, that French inventors, Louis Breguet and Charles Richet, created a successful helicopter that could fly for less than a minute.

Brazilian inventor, Alberto Santos-Dumont, is widely considered as the first person to fly a helicopter. On November 12, 1906, he set a world record by flying his No.18 bis in Paris. His craft was powered by an Antoinette engine, and it had the ability to fly for 20 seconds at an altitude of six feet. This flight established the world's first helicopter record.
