Sandro Botticelli

Nicknamed “little barrel” (botticelli), Sandro Botticelli was born in Florence, under the reign of Lorenzo the Magnificent. He first works for a goldsmith, which explains the chiseledness of his line. Attracted by painting, he rubbed shoulders with Fra Filippo Lippi, a monk and painter from Florence.

His first major work is his Adoration of the Magi where the Medici are painted. In 1481, Pope Sixtus IV commissioned frescoes from him for the Sistine Chapel. In 1482, his Spring sits the language of the artist, who executes figures filled with grace and transparency. The Birth of Venus , the first non-biblical nude since Antiquity, shows how, through the art of Botticelli, the humanism that reigns in Florence has found its interpreter. He illustrates the Divine Comedy by Dante (1490) when Florence was experiencing a major crisis. The preacher Savonarola chases the Medici from the city, announcing the Last Judgment. The Mystical Nativity signs the painter's will. A major artist, he embodies the humanism of the Renaissance.
