History of the Lota Rebellion (1856 AD)

Even before the revolution of 1857 AD, there was great dissatisfaction among the people towards the British Raj in Muzaffarpur. Every prisoner here was earlier given a brass ball, but the government decided that instead of the brass one, earthen pots would be given.

This decision was strongly opposed by the prisoners. As a result, the government again started giving brass balls to the prisoners. This rebellion is known as the Lota rebellion.
