Christopher Columbus did not call the Indigenous peoples of the Americas "Indians". He believed he had reached the East Indies, so referred to them as "Indios", the Spanish word for people from India. Columbus' error was later adopted by other Europeans and the term "Indian" has been widely used ever since, despite ongoing criticism and efforts to use more appropriate terminology such as Native American, or Indigenous peoples.
