What are some ancient Greek beliefs about the phases of moon?

Ancient Greek believed that the moon had three distinct phases which had different effects on the earth and its inhabitants.

1. New Moon

- Called Neomenia, it was associated with new begginings and rejuvenation.

- It influenced the human mind, making people more susceptible to change, inspiration and creativity.

2. Full Moon

- Called Selene or Panselinos, it was believed to be the most powerful phase.

- It was connected with emotions and intuition.

- It was thought that under a full moon, people's emotions were heightened, leading to increased passion, sensitivity and even madness (hence the term `lunacy` derived from Luna, the Roman name for Moon)

3. Waning Moon

- Known as Minoiymeno, it signified a period of reflection, introspection and releasing.

- It was believed that during this phase, the influence of the moon on human emotions diminished, allowing for a more rational an logical state of mind.
