Ancient history

What were the principles of feudalism?

1. Vassalage: An agreement between two people, in which one (the vassal) serves the other (the lord). In other words, lords agreed to grant land and protection to vassals in exchange for their service and loyalty.

2. Fief: The vassals were granted a piece of land called a fief in return for their service and loyalty. The vassal owned the land but it could not be inherited.

3. Sub-infeudation: Vassals could also grant a part of their fief to other vassals. This practice was called sub-infeudation.

4. Chivalry: A code of conduct that knights were supposed to follow. It included values like bravery, loyalty, and honor.

5. Feudal obligations: Vassals were required to provide certain services to their lord. These services could include military service, financial assistance, and labor on the lord's land.
