What was the status of Judaism in early Roman Empire?

In the early Roman Empire Judaism had the status of a religio licita, that is, a tolerated religion within the empire. Judaism received this privileged status for various reasons, the Jewish people did not actively proselytize and were seen relatively autonomous.

Although, this status allowed Jews various benefits and rights within the Roman society, Judaism occasionally found itself subject to various persecutions as well. Nevertheless, Judaism generally coexisted with a vast amount of diversity in ancient Rome and was able to evolve through different phases during this period.
