What types of ships did they use in the early 1600s?

Sailing Ships

* Galleon: A large, multi-decked ship with a high forecastle and a long, low stern. Galleons were used for both trade and warfare.

* Carrack: A large, high-sided ship with a rounded stern. Carracks were used for trade and exploration.

* Pinnace: A small, light ship with a single deck. Pinnaces were used for exploration, trade, and transportation.

* Frigate: A fast, maneuverable ship with a single deck. Frigates were used for scouting, raiding, and trade.

Rowing Ships

* Galley: A long, low ship with a single deck and a large number of oars. Galleys were used for warfare and transportation.

* Barge: A small, light ship with a single deck and a few oars. Barges were used for transportation and fishing.

Other Ships

* Schooner: A ship with two or more masts, each with a triangular sail. Schooners were used for trade and transportation.

* Sloop: A ship with a single mast and a single square sail. Sloops were used for trade and transportation.
