New Pence was the currency of the United Kingdom from 1971 to 1982, replacing the old penny (colloquially known as pre-decimal pennies) and coining the term 'new pence' to distinguish them.
1 new penny was equal to 2.4 old pence.
With time, the term "new pence" eventually became redundant, and coins denominated in pence dropped the word "new" in 1982.
The coins of the New Pence series were:
- 1 New Penny
- 2 New Pence
- 5 New Pence
- 10 New Pence
- 50 New Pence
After 1982, they began to be referred to as 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 50p respectively, and remained the main coinage until the introduction of two-pound (£2) coins in 1997 and new designs featuring Queen Elizabeth II in 1998.
