How did Athena and poseidon resolve their conflict?

The conflict between Athena and Poseidon over who would become the patron deity of the city of Athens was resolved through a competition. The gods agreed to allow the people of Athens to choose which deity they preferred by creating a gift for the city. Poseidon struck the ground with his trident, causing a spring of saltwater to erupt. Athena planted an olive tree which was seen as more valuable and beneficial to the people of Athens so they chose her as their patron deity. As a result, Athena became the city's namesake and was worshipped as its protector.
