Why was Attila the Hun known as Scourge of God?

The title "Scourge of God" was attributed to Attila the Hun to describe his reputation for brutally devastating and pillaging territories during his conquests in the 5th century. The label reflects his reputation as a ruthless and destructive leader who brought fear and destruction to the regions he invaded. However, it is worth noting that the designation "Scourge of God" was primarily employed by his contemporaries and chroniclers from the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium), and it may have had a political and psychological purpose in portraying him as an instrument of divine punishment or wrath upon their enemies.
