Why a heart removed from an Egyptian mummy?

Ancient Egyptians believed that the heart was the center of intelligence, emotion, and memory. They thought that when a person died, their soul would leave their body through the heart. For this reason, they took great care to preserve the heart during the mummification process.

The heart was removed from the body through a small incision in the chest. It was then washed and anointed with oils. Finally, it was placed in a special jar called a canopic jar. The canopic jars were placed in the tomb along with the mummy.

By preserving the heart, the ancient Egyptians believed that they were ensuring the soul would have a safe journey to the afterlife.
