The model rifle 1936 is adopted by the French Army to replace the Lebel model 1886/93 as well as the Berthier system weapons model 07/15M16 and 1892M16. It was manufactured by St. Stephen's Arms Manufactory. The weapon, used for nearly 4 decades, is simply called MAS 36 by its military users.
The weapon presents itself as a logical evolution-simplification of the Mauser system from which it borrows the 5-round magazine in five conce. The butt,it,is largely simplified:it bears two locking tenons in its rear and consists of nothing but 5 detachable elements:1/the cylinder head body; 2/the rear plug; 3/the percussionist; 4/the percussion spring; 5/the extractor (in theory,non-removable). One of the other features of this weapon is to not possess surety. The latest avatars of the MAS 36 system, are the FRF1 and FRF2 military precision weapons, whose kinship with their eldest is undeniable.

In addition to France (Army, Air Force, National Marine and Gendarmerie Nationale, French Militia), the 1,200,000 MAS 36 rifles were regulatory in (sometimes still) the armies of many former French colonies in Africa(Algeria, Benin, Burundi,Cameroon, Central Africa, Comoros, Congo, Ivory Coast, Djibouti,Gabon, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar, Morocco, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Seychelles and Chad). Similarly, it was supplied to supplemental lifters in Cambodia, Laos and in the State of Viet Nam during the Indochina War. He thus found himself in the hands of the Viet Minh. During the Vietnam War, he finished his Indochinese military career in the ranks of enemy Vietcong and ARVN
