History of Europe

Why did russia go to war in 1914?

The main reason for Russia going to war in 1914 was to defend its Slavic brethren, particularly Serbia. Russia had previously come to the aid of Slavic nations under attack by other countries, and was reluctant to back down in the face of Austria-Hungary's aggression against Serbia. Additionally, Russia was concerned about the growing power of Germany, and saw the conflict as an opportunity to weaken its rival and expand its own influence in Europe. Finally, Russia was motivated by economic and strategic considerations, as it sought to secure access to the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.
