Captain James Cook was English. He was born in Marton, Yorkshire, England in 1728. He joined the Royal Navy at the age of 18 and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a captain in 1768. Cook is best known for his three voyages of exploration to the Pacific Ocean, which took place between 1768 and 1779. During these voyages, he explored the coast of Australia, New Zealand, and the Hawaiian Islands, among other places. He also made contact with many indigenous peoples and documented their cultures. Cook was killed in 1779 during a conflict with indigenous Hawaiians.
