Why was steven f Austin arrested in 1833?

In December 1833, Texas colonists arrested Stephen F. Austin on charges of treason. It was suspected he had made arrangements to annex Texas to the United States. They also held Austin under house arrest and forced him to resign as commander of the American forces in Texas and forfeit all power except over his colony. However, the Mexican President, Antonio López de Santa Anna, released Austin in October 1834.
