History of Europe

What European countries began World War I?

The two main countries that began World War I were Austria-Hungary and Germany. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on July 28, 1914, after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. Germany supported Austria-Hungary and declared war on Russia on August 1, 1914, and on France on August 3, 1914. These declarations of war led to the outbreak of World War I.
