History of Europe

What resulted from the compromise of 1877?

The Compromise of 1877 was a political agreement between Northern Republicans and Southern Democrats that marked the end of Reconstruction and allowed for the removal of remaining federal troops from the former Confederate states. It allowed for Democratic political control over the South, ending the Republican's attempt to protect civil rights for formerly enslaved people. The compromise effectively ensured that white Southerners would control state governments and effectively keep African Americans from exercising their political rights.
