Historical story

Where did the gold and Kola nuts Songhai people trade come from?

Gold: The Songhai people primarily obtained gold from the Wangara region, which encompassed parts of present-day Senegal and Mali. The Bambouk Mountains in this area were rich in alluvial gold, which could be easily collected from riverbeds.

Kola nuts: Kola nuts were obtained from the southern regions of the forest zone, in present-day Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Ivory Coast. The kola nut tree, Cola nitida, is native to these areas and produces caffeine-rich seeds.
