History of Europe

What new sales did the church take on in European Middle Ages?

The Catholic church in the European Middle Ages took on the sale of indulgences. Indulgences were certificates of time off purgotory that the pope claimed he had the authority to sell. They were a way for the church to raise money, particularly for building projects such as the famous St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The sale of indulgences was one of the major factors that contributed to the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century.
