The Roman woman was at the same time an object of love and fear, desire and mockery. She was a respectable matron or a prostitute, a priestess or an empress, she was considered inferior according to the laws. But, despite this subordinate role, fundamentally as mothers and wives, women in Rome occupied a prominent role compared to other ancient societies. In Roman society there was an evolution of the condition of women, perceptible in customs and mentality. The exhibition Women of Rome. Seductive, maternal, excessive details, from 178 pieces of daily use and from the decoration of Roman villas, this status of a certain privilege that women achieved, and that was translated into different representations under the prism of mythology, religion and maternal strength , as well as in allegory of seduction and excess.
The exhibition is the result of an agreement between “la Caixa” Welfare Projects and the Louvre Museum for the joint organization of exceptional projects like this one, and includes outstanding works, such as a set of mural paintings from Pompeii, as well as others that have been expressly restored for exhibition at CaixaForum, such as the terracotta reliefs known as bell plaques.
