History of Europe

How did the outcome of treaty Versailles differ from intentions woo draw fourteen points?

The Treaty of Versailles:

- was harsh and punitive, especially the war guilt

clause and reparations.

- ignored the principle of self-determination.

- did not reflect the idealistic goals of the Fourteen

Points because:

* It did not resolve issues by impartial

mediation based on the interests of all

concerned people.

* It did not provide for self-determination of all

peoples because ethnic groups were still left

divided

* It did not ensure the reduction of

armaments to the lowest points consistent with

safety because Germany's military and air force

was limited in size while other nations were not

* It did not provide for open peace treaties openly

arrived at because the treaty of Versailles was

negotiated in secret by leaders of the Allied

Powers.

- it was not universally accepted, and many people,

especially in Germany, considered it to be

unjust and unfair.

- led to resentment in Germany and contributed to

the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party.
