History of Europe

When was the Panzer built?

The first tanks, known as "Landships", were developed by the British during World War I. The French developed the Schneider CA1 and Saint-Chamond in 1916, while the Germans developed the A7V in 1918. These early tanks were slow, unreliable, and mechanically complex.

After World War I, several countries continued to develop tank designs. In the 1930s, the Germans developed the Panzerkampfwagen (PzKpfw) I, II, III, and IV. These tanks were lighter and more maneuverable than their predecessors, and they incorporated several innovative features, such as sloped armor and torsion bar suspension. The PzKpfw IV was the most widely produced German tank of World War II, with over 8,500 units built.
