"The Faithless Greeks":The Greek Revolution in the Ottoman Archives

What was the reaction of the Sublime Gate to the outbreak of the local rebellions of 1821? How did the Ottomans perceive the reality and how did they route their reaction towards the "infidel Greeks"? Have we exhausted the sources around the Greek Revolution? Do we know its real dimension? These and many other related questions come to light in the new edition of the Ekaterini Laskaridis Foundation "Those Infidel Greeks":The Greek War of Independence through Ottoman Archival Documents ("These Infidel Greeks:The Greek Revolution through the Ottoman Archives").

Under the supervision of Dr. Sukru Ilijak, a large group of modern researchers bent over Ottoman archives, which until now had not been studied. The two-volume edition, which exceeds 1,600 pages, includes 700 documents transcribed from the Ottoman, translated and fully annotated. These are letters found in the Ayniyat Registers, which are preserved in the Ottoman Archives in Constantinople. The letters date from June 1821 to 1826, when the Great Powers began their formal diplomatic intervention. It is a project of international standards, for the first time by a Greek organization, a fact that is also validated by the collaboration with the Brill publishing house.

The edition is released in English, honoring both the international impact of the Greek Revolution - it is now clear that we are talking about a pan-European event - and the worldwide academic interest in these documents. Apart from the new information about the battles and the events of the Struggle, these documents come to support the perception of historians and scholars about the concept of revolution during the so-called Age of Revolutions. Consistent with its contribution to Greek history and following a relevant agreement with the Brill publishing house, the Aikaterinis Laskaridis Foundation secured the copyright of the work, thus ensuring electronic and free access to all interested parties. With one "click" the entire project will be available for storage across the length and breadth of the earth.
