History of South America

What caused the Rebellion?

The immediate cause of the Civil War was the secession of South Carolina from the United States after Abraham Lincoln took office as president in 1861. Seven southern states that relied on slavery formed the Confederate States of America, which began seizing U.S. forts, arsenals, and custom houses. Both the North and South quickly began raising armies as the Union launched an unsuccessful attempt to relieve Fort Sumter in South Carolina.
