On August 7, 1998, coordinated terrorist bombings occurred at the United States embassies in the cities of Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, killing 224 people. The attacks were carried out by al-Qaeda, a terrorist organization led by Osama bin Laden. The bombings were a retaliation for U.S. involvement in the Persian Gulf War and U.S. support of Israel.
