What did Lewis and Clark hope to do?

Explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory and find a direct route to the Pacific Ocean

The Louisiana Purchase had doubled the size of the United States. Although Americans believed the new land contained immense possibilities for wealth and trade, the exact nature and location of these resources were only vaguely known. Jefferson wanted an expedition to map the West. He also hoped and expected that Lewis and Clark might find natural rivers connecting the Mississippi River to the Pacific, perhaps by way of the Missouri.
