History of South America

What were five major ways in which white southerners reasserted their control the south after reconstruction?

1. Black Codes. Southern states passed Black Codes, which were laws that restricted the rights of African Americans. These laws included restrictions on voting, jury service, property ownership, and education.

2. Ku Klux Klan. The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was a terrorist organization that used violence and intimidation to suppress African Americans and prevent them from exercising their rights.

3. Redemption. Southern whites regained political control of the South through a process called "Redemption." This involved white Democrats overthrowing Republican governments in the South and reestablishing white supremacy.

4. Jim Crow laws. Jim Crow laws were laws that segregated African Americans from whites in public places, such as schools, restaurants, and transportation.

5. Lynching. Lynching was the extralegal killing of African Americans by white mobs. Lynching was a common way for white southerners to terrorize African Americans and maintain white supremacy.
