History of South America

Why did some southerners reject William Tecumseh Sherman and plan to give land former slaves?

William Tecumseh Sherman, rather than giving freedmen land, implemented the Field Order No. 15 which confiscated land along the Atlantic Coast from Charleston, South Carolina to Jacksonville, Florida and distributed the land to freed slaves. This measure was, however, revoked by President Andrew Johnson in 1865. After the war, President Johnson pursued Presidential Reconstruction, which included giving land to some freedmen.
