What year did the first adhesive stamps sold in US?

The first adhesive stamps sold in the US were issued on July 1, 1847. These stamps, known as the "Post Office Issue" or the "1847 Issue", were designed by Rawdon Wright Hatch and James Smillie. The first series of stamps included a 5-cent stamp featuring George Washington and a 10-cent stamp featuring Benjamin Franklin.
